UIF and SDL for School Payroll: What South African Schools Need to Know

By Paylio Team

Paying staff correctly means knowing exactly what deductions and contributions apply to every payroll run. For most South African schools, two of the most common are UIF and SDL — and getting them wrong, even by a small margin, is the kind of thing that turns into a bigger problem later.

What is UIF?

UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) is a shared contribution: both employer and employee pay 1% of the employee's remuneration each, for a combined 2%. It's designed to give staff a safety net if they lose their job, go on maternity leave, or are unable to work.

UIF contributions are capped at a maximum monthly remuneration ceiling. Following Budget 2026, that ceiling increased to R17,712 per month (up from R14,872), which puts the maximum UIF contribution at R177.12 from the employee and R177.12 from the employer — R354.24 combined, per staff member, per month.

UIF thresholds are adjusted in most Budget Speeches, so the exact cap can change year to year. Worth confirming the current figure with SARS or your payroll provider before finalising a run.

What is SDL?

SDL (Skills Development Levy) is 1% of your total monthly payroll, paid by the employer only — there's no employee-side deduction. It funds skills development and training initiatives across South Africa.

Schools and organisations with an annual payroll under R500,000 are exempt from SDL entirely. If you're above that threshold, SDL is declared and paid alongside PAYE and UIF through your monthly EMP201 submission to SARS.

How this fits into your school's payroll run

Calculating PAYE, UIF and SDL by hand across a full staff list — teachers, admin, part-time and casual staff — is exactly the kind of task where a single manual error snowballs into a compliance issue months later. It's also one of the main reasons schools end up needing a bookkeeper just to run payroll correctly.

Paylio calculates PAYE, UIF and SDL automatically on every payroll run, checks compliance status before you approve, and keeps a full audit trail — all from a WhatsApp message.
